Each Pharmacy Technician is responsible for assisting the staff pharmacists in the various functions of the Department, including dispensing and order filling responsibilities, inventory controls, IV admixtures, and prepackaging.

Special Criteria Details

Working no more than 832 hours per year


  1. Inpatient and outpatient retrieval, entry, and filling of medication orders for pharmacists' checking.
  2. Filling floor stock orders, code cart replacement, IV admixture functions, and delivery responsibilities.
  3. Inventory ordering, maintenance of stock levels, and prepackaging functions.
  4. Pharmacy housekeeping responsibilities such as monitoring cleanliness of counters, refrigerators, storage units and cabinets, etc.
  5. Rotate through all work areas of the Pharmacy as appropriate
  6. Prepare medications and supplies for dispensing.
  7. Pre-pack bulk medications
  8. Ensure all products received from vendors possess readable bar codes for point of care scanning and any other applications.
  9. Operate equipment for preparation of total parenters/nutrition, cardioplegis and other solutions as appropriate.
  10. Receive and prepare prescriptions for outpatients.
  11. Prepares batches of IV products for checking by a pharmacist.
  12. Enter prescription, order information into pharmacy computer systems for verification by pharmacist.
  13. Screen telephone calls and troubleshoot non-clinical problems on telephone or on nursing units.
  14. Prepare deliveries for distribution to automated dispensing cabinets for checking by pharmacists.
  15. Deliver medications to automated dispensing cabinets on nursing units and procedural locations and offsite areas.
  16. Charge and credit items sent from and returned to pharmacy as appropriate.
  17. Prepare controlled substances for receipt and dispensing for verification by a pharmacist.
  18. Audit controlled substances as required.
  19. Perform monthly nursing unit inspections.
  20. Assist in training new employees.
  21. Prepare and place orders of medications and other supplies from vendors, wholesalers or other hospital departments.
  22. Other duties as assigned.


  1. High School Diploma (minimum) required.
  2. Hospital Pharmacy experience preferred. 
  3. Must pass basic calculations competency.
  4. Computer experience preferred.
  5. Ability to type at least 35 words per minute.
  6. For night positions that work a 7-day on, 7-day off schedule, applicants must have sufficient PTO available to use 10 hours per pay period or work the additional hours.
  7. Must pass basic computer skills competency (Windows).
