  • Overview

    The Behavioral Health Services (MHU) Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner shall assist and supplement the Psychiatric Staff Physician in the delivery of mental health care within the Adult and Child/Adolescent Units.  The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner can assess, diagnose and treat patients presenting to the Unit in accordance with predetermined protocols.  The primary responsibility will be providing care to the adult seriously ill patients as deemend appropriate according to the patient and staffing needs.  Patient population of psychiatric patient young adult to geriatrics.


    1. Completes a psychiatric history and documents findings in the medical record.
    2. Orders/interprets appropriate diagnostic tests and documents in the medical record.
    3. Formulates clinical impression/diagnosis based on clinical findings.
    4. Initiates and documents appropriate treatment plan.
    5. Develops of a discharge plan for patients under their care and communicate / educate patient and family to plan.
    6. Works collaboratively with the supervising psychiatrist, physicians and nursing staff, and provides back up for fluctuations in workload throughout the Unit as necessary.
    7. Participates in departmental/hospital committees as requested.
    8. Participates in departmental/hospital-wide quality improvement program
    9. Demonstrates commitment to continued growth through attendance at educational programs.
    10. Maintains working knowledge of the various stages of growth development and health status of these wide populations.  Utilizes appropriate resources.
    11. Demonstrates knowledge of the Scope of Practice for Nurse Practitioners in New York State; CVPH Medical Staff Bylaws, Adult Mental Health Unit Policies, Protocols, Procedures and Standards of medical practice.
    12. Regularly attends department meetings.
    13. Other duties as assigned.


    1. Currently hold an active registered nurse license in NYS.
    2. Hold a Master’s or higher degree in nursing from an accredited program.
    3. Certification as a nurse practitioner in designated area of practice by a national certifying organization; Experience with treating patient with mental illness required.
    4. Establishes a practice agreement with a collaborating physician working in the facility.
    5. Provide evidence of prescriptive privilege accomplishment, as well as DEA number.
    6. Provide documentation within 30 days of employment indicating no record of child abuse, neglect and/or maltreatment through NYS Central Register.
    7. Required to participate with on call rotation.


    As applicable, the individual has training/competency in attending to the special needs and/or behaviors appropriate to the age of the patients for which care is being provided.
