Overview

The In/Outpatient Pharmacy Technician will work under the supervision of a pharmacist in either the inpatient or the retail pharmacy as assigned. In the inpatient pharmacy, responsibilities include dispensing and order filling, inventory controls, IV admixtures, and prepackaging. The retail pharmacy technician will assist with order entry, filling, inventory control, insurance issues, reporting, and operating the cash register.

Responsibilities

Outpatient

  • Performs demographic and prescription data entry into pharmacy computer for outpatients under direct supervision of a pharmacist in accordance with accepted Pharmacy practice  Refers to pharmacist, computer alerts for medication related problems such as interactions, allergies, etc.
  • Runs cash register and assists customers at pharmacy counter.
  • Answers questions and provides information to pharmacy customers, and health care professionals on insurance claim issues.
  • Enters data into pharmacy database such as patient name, prescribed medication and cost, maintains pharmacy files, charge system, and inventory

Inpatient

  • Filling floor stock orders, code cart replacement, IV admixture functions, and delivery responsibilities.
  • Rotate through all work areas of the Pharmacy as appropriate.
  • Prepare medications and supplies for dispensing.
  • Ensure all products received from vendors possess readable bar codes for point of care scanning and any other applications.
  • Prepare deliveries for distribution to automated dispensing cabinets for checking by pharmacists.
  • Deliver medications to automated dispensing cabinets on nursing units and procedural locations and offsite areas.
  • Charge and credit items sent from and returned to pharmacy as appropriate.
  • IV preparation duties as deemed appropriate.

In/Outpatient

  • Performs mixing, packaging, and labeling pharmaceuticals in accordance with prescribers orders as deemed appropriate by a pharmacist.
  • Maintains established procedures concerning quality assurance, security of controlled substances, and disposal of hazardous waste drugs.
  • Works with pharmacist to ensure work is performed efficiently and appropriately.  Works with minimal supervision.  Organizes and prioritizes work flow according to patient needs and work assigned.  Assures services are provided in a timely manner.
  • Answers telephone in a courteous manner, identifying self and department.  Directs calls to appropriate individuals as applicable.
  • Assures pharmacy work areas and equipment are clean, neat, and well organized.
  • Maintains sanitary and neat work areas.
  • Maintains competence required for current area of practice.
  • Inpatient and outpatient retrieval, entry, and filling of medication orders for pharmacists’ checking.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  1. High School Diploma (minimum) required.
  2. 1 year minimum retail/community pharmacy experience within the past 5 years preferred.
  3. Valid National Pharmacy Technician Certification requried.
  4. Good communication and organizational skills. The ability to prioritize multiple tasks and work with frequent interruption is required.
  5. Computer experience preferred.
