  • Overview

    The Psychiatric Social Worker will be primarily responsible for providing psychosocial assessment and support to inpatients on the Behavioral Health Units contributing to treatment planning.  This individual will work in conjunction with psychiatry and the nursing staff in the therapeutic milieu.  He/she will further assist in supervising students and in-servicing staff as required by unit needs. This individual will also be responsible for overseeing the discharge planning activities of the staff and will review the appropriateness of the discharge plan for all patients on the Behavioral Health Unit.  He/she will participate in program planning and staff development as well as function as the community liaison for agencies referrals.  The MSW will be required to float to between the Adult Mental Health Unit, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Unit, and Behavioral Decision Unit during times of low census.

    Special Criteria Details

    Will train to cover Med/Surg: CWC, ICU, SNF, CAMU, AMHU, ECC assignment will vary


    1. Demonstrates ability to conduct a psychosocial assessment to be used as a basis for treatment planning.
    2. In conjunction with the multidisciplinary team, develops a treatment plan with discharge criteria. The plan prescribes brief treatment modalities emphasizing stabilization of symptoms and transfer to a less restrictive setting.
    3. Incorporates families, significant others, school and community agencies into the treatment process for patients.
    4. Incorporates individual, family, and group therapeutic techniques according to each patient’s treatment plan and documents intervention.
    5. Incorporates family therapeutic techniques according to each patient’s treatment plan and documents intervention.
    6. Conducts group sessions selecting participants and choosing methods as part of multidisciplinary team according to each patient’s treatment plan.
    7. Participates in daily report, daily sessions, discharge meeting, and weekly rounds pertaining to patients assessment/treatment and discharge needs.
    8. Documents progress notes in the medical record reflecting patient and family involvement. Works with Case Manager and the rest of the team regarding community referrals and discharge planning.
    9. Maintains a flexible work schedule to meet the needs of the unit.
    10. Adequately performs and maintains competency in the use of Therapeutic Crisis Intervention skills/PMCS training.
    11. Able to discuss each patient's status with all members of the multidisciplinary team in terms of behavioral symptoms and DSM-V diagnosis.
    12. Participates as a member of the multidisciplinary team.
    13. Establishes therapeutic relationships with child, adolescent and adult mental health patients and their families while maintaining therapeutic distance.
    14. Demonstrates ability to provide age-specific care (assessment, treatment planning, and intervention) to the child ages 6 to 11 and to the adolescent ages 12 to 18 and to adults.
    15. Supports professionalism on the unit by demonstrating accountability for personal, professional, ethical and legal standards.
    16. Conducts screening, assessments and referrals of patients with alcohol and drug issues.
    17. Responds to referrals by the Trauma Team to facilitate communication and provide support.
    18. Other duties as assigned.


    1. Master's Degree in Social Work from an accredited school of Social Work.
    2. Must have current New York State license to practice as LMSW (Licensed Medical Social Worker) or LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker).
    3. One year experience in a hospital or related health/mental health unit as a Psychiatric Social Worker.
    4. Behavioral Health experience preferred.
    5. Provides documentation within the first 30 days of employment indicating no record of Child Abuse, Neglect and/or Maltreatment through the New York State Central Register.


    As applicable, the individual has training/competency in attending to the special needs and/or behaviors appropriate to the age of the patients for which care is being provided.
