The Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician is responsible for the centralized cleaning, decontamination, storage, processing, assembling, issuance, and preparation of medical and surgical supplies and equipment.  The technician must perform tasks quickly and efficiently paying close attention to detail and understanding the principals involved in each task performed.  The technician also maintains infection control standards for the health and safety of hospital patients and personnel.  The technician is responsible for assisting with the department daily activities including work flow, prioritizing job tasks.


  1. Receives, decontaminates, cleans, disinfects, prepares and sterilizes reusable items based upon current methodology.
  2. Correctly identifies the unassembled components of each surgical instrument tray, inspects and assembles per prescribed listing and in accordance with AORN and AAMI standards.
  3. Responsible for processing of fiberoptic and laparoscopic instruments, and orthopedic hardware plus specialty instrument sets; e.g. eye (requires specific ultra-sonic process) dental, nasal, neuro, following manufacturer’s instructions and appropriate standards.  Implant processing includes Medical Device tracking.
  4. Monitors the disinfecting and sterilization process using chemical, gas or steam to ensure accurate solutions, controls and processing times are correctly performed.  Maintains requirements of all regulating bodies, including accurate documentation and labeling.
  5. Maintains knowledge and performs all tasks and responsibilities in accordance with universal precautions, Infection Control and exposure control policies.
  6. Correctly wraps/packages items for sterilization in accordance with manufacturers instructions and appropriate standards.  Labels such items with correct identification and sterilization identification.
  7. Operates all equipment used in the processing function ensuring equipment is functioning correctly and with exact knowledge of processing times.  (Sterilizers, heat sealers, etc.)
  8. Stores and distributes all sterile and clean supplies in accordance with departmental policy.
  9. Recognizes an emergency situation and initiates proper plan of action.
  10. Other duties as assigned.


  1. High school diploma or GED.
  2. Registered Central Service Technician (RCST) must be obtained within 18 months of hire unless applicant provides proof of employment as a SPD Tech as of January 2013.
  3. Experience in sterile processing considered first, operating room environment considered next, all other applicants considered last.
  4. Ability to understand and carry out policies and procedures necessary for the position.
  5. Has a high degree of accuracy.
  6. Possesses the ability to work independently.
  7. Ability to move packages and other supply items in a rapid and skillful manner.
  8. Must be customer service oriented.
  9. Must be organized and have excellent communication skills.


As applicable, the individual has training/competency in attending to the special needs and/or behaviors appropriate to the age of the patients for which care is being provided.
