  • Overview

    Pre-hospital:    The EMT functions as defined by New York State Department of Health, Emergency Medical Services certification standards. Performs all duties as outlined by local Medical Control Protocols.

     

    Hospital:          The EMT performs various duties as outlined in the Job Description, and assists staff nurses and physicians in the treatment and care of patients in accordance with the established policies and procedures of the Medical Center.  All ambulance calls will take priority over the assignment.

    Special Criteria Details

    Working no more than 832 hours per year. *WAIVER REQUIRED

    Responsibilities

    1. As directed, takes and records temperature, pulse, respiration, weight, height, intake/output measurements, blood pressure, and pulse oximetry.
    2. Provides care to the patient requiring specimen collection.
    3. Documents/Communicates care consistently and timely to team leader RN to include any changes observed in condition or behavior of patient.
    4. Assists in maintaining a safe, clean, stocked and functional environment by reporting equipment that is out of order.
    5. Provides care according to standards to the patient requiring restraints/ protective/supportive devices, fall protocol, wandering/elopement/ suicide/ abduction and seizure precautions.
    6. Performs in crisis and emergency (e.g. cardiopulmonary arrest and the Heimlich maneuver) while maintaining a positive calm approach.
    7. Provides care using infection control practices as outlined in Medical Center policies/procedures (e.g. Universal Standard Precautions and Isolation Techniques).
    8. Demonstrates knowledge/ability to effectively use applicable devices and technology (computer, urinary catheter, etc).
    9. Supports fluctuation in patient care needs by floating/overtime when required.
    10. Works effectively with RN in carrying out delegated duties on assigned patient care team.
    11. Maintains stock supplies in conjuction with Material Management. Cleans and restocks surgical instruments daily.
    12. Assists physician and nursing staff with surgical, medical and orthopedic procedures as directed.
    13. Assists with the discharge of patients under the direct supervision of the Registered Nurse or physician.
    14. Performs technical procedures as directed (e.g., EKGs, phlebotomy, splinting).
    15. Documents care rendered. Responds to all ambulance calls in a timely manner and carries out patient care as directed by Medical Control Protocols or direct communications.
    16. Documents care rendered.
    17. Documents on Pre-hospital Care Report and maintains Ambulance Log.
    18. Assures ambulance is equipped and always prepared for emergencies.
    19. Attends educational programs and ambulance critiques presented by Clinton County EMS.
    20. Safely operates first reponse vehicle
    21. Completes all skill demonstration requirements as per Clinton County EMS.
    22. Takes direction from EMT III when responding to ambulance calls.
    23. Other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications

    1. High school graduate or equivalent work experience, including ability to read, write and comprehend medical terminology.
    2. New York State Basic EMT certification required.
    3. Previous experience as an EMT preferred.
    4. Meets requirements of pre-employment screening and physical.
    5. Holds a current U.S. Driver's license.
    6. Meets requirement to drive an ambulance

     

    As applicable, the individual has training/competency in attending to the special needs and/or behaviors appropriate to the age of the patients for which care is being provided.
