The Director has the authority, responsibility, and accountability for the overall program operations and patient care provided in a clinical area 24/7. This individual displays competence in the 5 core health care competencies of interdisciplinary team work, quality improvement, evidence based practice, patient focused care and informatics. Responsibilities include organizational planning, compliance with regulatory standards, fiscal management, setting and maintaining standards of nursing care and practice, coordinating services, and providing for the professional growth of staff.  Daily responsibilities include upholding the standard of care with all staff, patient care and concerns, staff concerns, communication with staff, monthly budget reporting, staffing of the unit on a shift by shift basis, attending various meetings and committee requirements.


Works within Interdisciplinary Teams

  1. Serves as a resource for leadership team(s) to ensure consistent application of Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBA).
  2. Develops, implements and maintains a recruitment and retention plan in collaboration with staff and interdisciplinary teams.
  3. Facilitates interdisciplinary collaboration using team processes for change and decision-making.
  4. Creates an environment which recognizes and values interdisciplinary roles and differences in staff, physicians, patients and community.

Values Communication and Relationship Building

  1. Delivers oral presentations to diverse audiences on nursing, healthcare, and/or organizational issues.
  2. Produces relevant written materials to address nursing, healthcare, and/or organizational issues.
  3. Utilizes active listening skills and is responsive to concerns.

  5. Confirms positive behaviors and confronts/manages negative behaviors of staff, physicians, peers, and other hospital employees.

  10. Designs, implements, and evaluates educational programs 24/7 using various teaching/learning methodologies in partnership with Clinical Education Managers.
  11. Creates opportunities for employees to be involved in decision-making.

Utilizes Informatics/Business Skills

  1. Develops, implements and monitors a sound fiscal plan for the department based on relevant data and best practice (operating/capital).
  2. Reviews monthly operating reports, and submits financial analysis/justification for variances with written action plan.
  3. Maintains an equal to or less than 5% variance in salary and non-salary expenses and HPPD (Hour Per Patient Day).
  4. Develops, implements, and monitors staffing plan which assesses patient need and assigns nursing personnel to provide care to patients based on the levels of staff expertise available.
  5. Demonstrates active participation in application of informatic resources.
  6. Educates patient care team members on financial implications of patient care decisions.
  7. Demonstrates advanced competence/skill with Microsoft Office products (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint), internet search engines and technology based communication programs, (e.g., Groupwise).
  8. Uses telecommunications devices as per CVPH guidelines.
  9. Participates in the evaluation of information systems in the practice setting.
  10. Manages applications for structured data entry and analysis (e.g., productivity measuring systems, acuity levels).

  1. Demonstrates ongoing professional development and lifelong learning in self and staff.
  2. Provides clinical coaching and career counseling to staff and aspiring leaders.
  3. Participates in the CVPH organizational and nursing Strategic Plan; develops and communicates a consistent strategic plan for Progressive Care.
  4. Applies methods to hold staff accountable (i.e. standard, strategic plan).

  7. Defines the department’s/unit’s scope of services and major aspects of care based upon the population served.
  8. Maintains the systems and facilitates the process for developing, implementing, and evaluating standards of care and standards of practice based on the patient population, relevant professional standards, and evidenced based practice/research.
  9. Assures that patient care is delivered utilizing an appropriate model of care delivery for the patient population served.
  10. Ensures that care providers practice in roles as allowed by NYS Practice Act, the ANA Code of Ethics, other regulatory agencies, and applicable governing laws.
  11. Develops, implements, and evaluates a plan to ensure staff competence, and professional development.
  12. Completes staff performance evaluations in the timeframe as outlined by CVPH’s policies.
  13. Provides clear and consistent performance feedback to staff.
  14. Schedules routine off-shift and weekend availability, targeting off-shift on a monthly basis and weekend availability quarterly.
  15. Has identified a succession plan for key unit positions.

Applies Quality and Patient-Focused Care

  1. Leads successful performance improvement initiatives demonstrating expertise.
  2. Utilizes research findings for the establishment of standards, practices and patient care models in the organization.
  3. Supports the organization-wide patient safety program as well as supports safety surveys, responding and acting on safety recommendations.
  4. Articulates the organizational and departmental/unit quality improvement goals and objectives.
  5. Develops, implements and evaluates a performance improvement program which incorporates clinical data, service excellence, quality improvement and risk management.
  6. Makes daily patient and staff rounds to assess status of patient quality of care delivered.


  1. BSN/MSN or active involvement in BSN/MSN program with completion by Spring 2018 required.
  2. MS in healthcare preferred.
  3. Current RN license in NYS required.
  4. Certified Medical Surgical, Oncology and/or ONS Chemo/ Biotherapy certification  preferred.
  5. Must Demonstrate telemetry and IV therapy training.
  6. Must demonstrate leadership and managerial abilities with good oral and written communication.
  7. Must meet pre-employement screening and physical.
  8. Five years clinical/relevant clinical experience with three years supervisory experience required.
  9. Experience with Microsoft Office, quality/risk management system, electronic medical record system, bed management system as applicable, transport/resource management system as applicable, learning management system, staffing/scheduling system, automated medication dispensing system as applicable, MSDS, automated communication system and other role specific technology required.

As applicable, the individual has training/competency in attending to the special needs and/or behaviors appropriate to the age of the patients for which care is being provided.
