  • Overview

    An OR Technician / OB Technician (ORT/OBT) is a member of the CWC surgical team who acts as a primary scrub person and must be technically adept by handling the instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary before, during and after the surgical procedure / vaginal delivery. He/She may also circulate under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse.   The ORT/OBT must be able to take call as scheduled, anticipate the needs of the surgeon, have excellent adaptation and coping skills, have excellent organizational skills and be a team player. Must be able to stand for prolonged periods of time. Must be able to lift patient and equipment with assistance of other personnel or without as need dictates. ORT/OBT must have excellent communication skills and maintains asepsis, supplies and inventory at all times.

    Special Criteria Details



    1. Ensures necessary equipment, supplies and instrumentation are available in a timely manner.
    2. Identifies/Utilizes appropriate methods of sterilization/disinfection.
    3. Maintains principles of aseptic technique.
    4. Sets up mayo stand, back table and delivery table to facilitate handling of instruments and supplies during surgical procedure/delivery of newborn (vaginal or C-Section).
    5. Functions as a scrubbed member of the surgical team, selecting/ providing instrumentation appropriate to the patient's size/age.
    6. Assists in the circulating role for the infant, child, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient under direct supervision of the RN.
    7. Maintains a safe, infection-controlled environment by defined attire, traffic policies, universal precautions and isolation techniques.
    8. Helps prepare room between patients in a timely manner.
    9. Terminally cleans OR suite at end of schedule.
    10. Follows safety measures to protect patient and team members.
    11. Provides assistance for the patient in cardiopulmonary arrest or malignant hyperthermia crisis.
    12. Reads posted communication in a timely manner.
    13. Delivers specimens to Lab.
    14. Assists in transporting patients when necessary.
    15. Assists with ordering supplies, stocking supplies in OR and L&D room.
    16. Assists with vaginal deliveries; admission of patients.
    17. Maintaining logs (refrigerator logs, QC logs, temperature logs).
    18. Computer input of orders.
    19. Assist with patient care within the CWC Department under the supervision of an RN. Assist other team members in patient care and/or delivery tasks.
    20. Answers phone calls, assembles and maintains patient records and maintains security/privacy of labor and delivery areas.
    21. Performs in crisis and emergency situations while maintaining a positive and calm approach.
    22. Collects and records clinical/personal data and compiles statistical data as assigned.
    23. Cleans the surgical scrub sinks daily. Restocks surgical scrub brushes. Empties and relines trash containers in all rooms.
    24. Reports equipment that is out of order, empties linen and keeps corridors and supply rooms free from obstruction.
    25. Cleans OR suites after use. This would include cleaning of infant warmer, wiping of all flat surfaces and putting room back together (suction, linen, instruments, etc.)
    26. Collects blood samples from peripartum patients via venipuncture or capillary methods.
    27. Supports fluctuation in patient care/unit needs by utilizing skills in other areas of unit as needed. Works overtime when required.
    28. Other duties as assigned.
    • Use two identifiers.
    • Informs the patient of the anticipated procedure.
    • Identifies indications for specific size of venipuncture needle/collection device.
    • Identifies blood collection tubes for various specimens.
    • Identifies contraindications for areas of venipuncture.
    • Performs venipuncture using accepted technique.
    • Secures area of venipuncture with tape and dry dressing.

    28.  Supports fluctuation in patient care/unit needs by utilizing skills in other areas of unit as needed. Works overtime when required.


    29.  Other duties as assigned.



    1. High school graduate or equivalent required.
    2. Graduate of a surgical technology school with certification obtained within 12 months from graduation OR proof of one year of employment as a surgical technician within the four years immediately prior to January 1, 2015. OR a currently Licensed Practical Nurse in New York State required.
    3. Meets requirements of pre-employment screening and physical.
    4. Excellent attendance record required.
    5. Possess basic windows knowledge.
    6. Must be able to take call as scheduled.
    7. Must be self-motivated and technically adept.
    8. Able to handle a high stress level.
    9. Must be able to stand for prolonged periods.
    10. BLS Certified preferred or obtain within six months.
    11. Knowledge of technical OR equipment and/or Anatomy & Physiology.
    12. Knowledge of inputing physician orders – supply orders preferred.
    13. Proof of 15 hours of continuing education yearly. 

    As applicable, the individual has training/competency in attending to the special needs and/or behaviors appropriate to the age of the patients for which care is being provided.
