  • Overview

    The Financial Advocate, in the interest of price transparency and patient satisfaction, will identify all patient out of pocket costs for all scheduled patients and will meet with them before the schedule test/procedure to convey the information and identify payment sources and establish payment arrangements.   The financial advocate will also be available to any unscheduled patients who are in need of assistance in finding funding sources for their healthcare services.  They will be certified application counselors for the Healthcare marketplace.

    Responsibilities

    1. Establishes payment arrangements with patients for their bills.
    2. Completes financial clearance process with all patients that have an out of pocket expense for their future scheduled services by calling them and meeting with them to collect the payment prior to services, establish a payment plan, finds alternative source of coverage or determines eligibility for Financial Assistance Program.
    3. Notifies insurance companies of admissions.
    4. Meets with patients and resolves their questions and/or complaints.
    5. Assists patients with completing applications in the Healthcare Marketplace.
    6. Visits self-pay patients on the nursing units to establish coverage for their stay and if none is there, works with patient and/or family on finding payment resources.
    7. Completes/compiles Financial Assistance Program applications and prepares packet for submission to be approved.
    8. Works closely with Case Management; transitions patients from one level of care to another as required.
    9. Reviews all maternity cases for coverage and follows up on all newborns for insurance coverage.
    10. This position will require a weekend rotation and some positions will require evening shifts.
    11. Reply to all inquiries coming in on the patientaccounting@cvph.org e-mail.
    12. Handles all Bankruptcy notices and attorney requests for itemized bills.
    13. Monitors and works Medicaid pending encounters.
    14. Notarize documents as required.
    15. Other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications

    1. High School graduate or GED required.
    2. Medical Terminology course certificate required OR anatomy and physiology course as evidenced by transcript with “C” or better grade required.
    3. AA Degree in Business, Finance or Healthcare related field preferred.
    4. 5 years of healthcare experience with a focus on finance and customer service required.
    5. Ability to operate a 10 key calculator at 8000 key strokes per hour with a 97% accuracy rate required as evidenced by a 10 key calculator test.
    6. Ability to type 45 Net/Adjusted WPM required as evidenced by typing test.
    7. High level of interpersonal, telephone and communication skills required based on previous experience.
    8. Must become a Notary Public within one year of hire into this position.
    9. Must take a basic coding course within 3 months of hire.
    10. Microsoft Excel and Word Course Certificates required, or evidenced by passing a CVPH test requirement.
    11. Must become a Certified Application Counselor for the Healthcare Marketplace within 6 months of entering this position.

     As applicable, the individual has training/competency in attending to the special needs and/or behaviors appropriate to the age of the patients for which care is being provided.
