  • Overview


    The Network Communications and Media Relations Specialist is responsible for the strategic development and execution of proactive Communications and Media Relations programs and builds relationships internally and externally to support affiliate and Network goals. As a member of the Network Communications and Media Relations teams, this specialist is deployed primarily to the Alice Hyde Medical Center to provide targeted service to the NNY Region and to other Network projects as assigned. Working collaboratively with Network Communications, Media, Engagement Strategies (Marketing), Digital and Government/Community Relations teams, this individual is a well-rounded communicator and project manager who is committed to quality and experienced in communication planning, organizational and executive communication, multimedia storytelling and the entrepreneurial development of original content that can be utilized locally and across the Network through traditional, digital and social channels and amplified through engagement campaigns as well as through earned, sponsored and owned content placements. The specialist is responsible for public and media relations and crafts proactive media pitches, builds and manages media relationships, writes and distributes press releases, and during a crisis works closely with the affiliate/Network leadership to plan and execute crisis communication strategies. This individual is engaged with the Malone community and works to build meaningful relationships.

    Key Accountabilities:

    • Uphold The University of Vermont Medical Center Mission, Values and Standards of Excellence.
    • Contribute to the development of a strategic plan for NNY Communication and Engagement Strategies that creates a roadmap for local efforts and aligns with the Network department strategic plan.
    • Serve as an internal and external storyteller for Alice Hyde Medical Center and the NNY region and for other projects as assigned.
    • Create a Media Relations function and process at Alice Hyde.
    • Work to promote internal and external awareness and engagement around Alice Hyde capabilities, people and expertise and support patient communication.
    • Proactively contribute to workload management and tracking and content sharing strategies across the Network.
    • Understand brand standards and work to ensure the highest brand executions in support of Alice Hyde and in the NNY region.
    • Create an updated audience matrix and channel strategy for reaching internal and external Alice Hyde and NNY community and influencers.
    • Crisis Communication.
    • Works to steward and build new relationships in the Malone community.



    Bachelor’s degree in journalism, public relations, communications, integrated marketing/communications or English preferred.


    At least five years of experience in journalism, public relations, integrated marketing/communications or related media or creative agency work.

    Proven experience in a high stakes environment with the ability to prioritize a demanding workload with multiple deadlines.

    Strong digital orientation.

    A storyteller at heart who can mine for stories to support both internal and external engagement and awareness needs.

    Entrepreneurial in nature and proactive, oriented to mining for good stories on a range of topics -- people, patients, organizational accomplishments, health-related topics and contemporary issues -- that are relatable for a variety of audiences.

    Adept at building and maintaining relationships to support positive and proactive public and media relations efforts.

    Experienced and nimble in executing across traditional print, digital and social channels and oriented toward multimedia storytelling – comfortable using a Smartphone to shoot photographs and video and posting content.

    Able to translate complex subjects into explanatory storytelling.

    Strategically-oriented and able to align with and execute against a strategic plan.
