  • Overview

    Under the supervision of the Director, Clinical Operations Supervisor, or staff nurse, the Certified Kidney Dialysis Technician performs various duties to assist in the treatment and care of ESRD patients in accordance with established policies and procedures of the Medical Center. The Dialysis Technician performs those direct care activities which are allowed to be delegated to unlicensed personnel under the NYS Practice Act, regulations, hospital policies, and standards met by Nursing Services. The Certified Kidney Dialysis Technician also performs support functions for the unit/department as assigned by the appropriate Registered Nurse and/or manager.   He/She is responsible to provide support and assistance to the medical and nursing staff to assure a coordinated patient experience. He/She will maintain dialysis certification. Duties may include, but are not limited to cannulation of dialysis access, initiating dialysis treatments, monitoring of patient treatment, discontinuing patient treatments, obtaining supplies and equipment necessary before, during and after a dialysis procedure, provide patient care under the direct supervision of an RN, assisting with station turnover, assisting with a variety of therapeutic interventions, participating in the dialysis care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, and cleaning, stocking, and organizing the dialysis treatment area and all support areas. He/She must be reliable, work independently, be highly organized, capable of anticipating where assistance is needed and work well with people. He/She must meet the unique demands of a fast paced, dialysis environment meeting quality outcomes in an economically viable and customer friendly way.


    Special Criteria Details



    1. Adheres to and supports company policies and procedures.

    2. Complies with Federal, State, OSHA and other regulatory agencies.

    3. Initiates, monitors and terminates the dialysis treatment according to policy and under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse.

    4. Administers normal saline which is considered integral parts of the dialysis treatment and has completed training demonstrating competency in reasons for administration. This can only be done under direct supervision of a licensed nurse.

    5. Completes the start-up, rinsing, set-up, testing, tear down and disinfection of the dialysis machines according to policy.

    6. Observes the patient pre, during and post dialysis treatment and reports any changes or problems to the charge nurse.

    7. Documents accurately on the patient’s treatment sheet, including but not limited to vital signs, weights pre and post treatment, machine tests, sterilant tests, and at least half hour comments on the patient condition.

    8. Assists with emergency procedures such as fire/disasters and CPR.

    9. Cleans dialysis machines, patient chairs, and ancillary equipment after each patient treatment.

    10. Knows infection control procedures and wears appropriate personal protective equipment.

    11. Knows how to trouble shoot machine problems.

    12. Participates in in-services and staff meetings.

    13. Performs additional duties as assigned by nurse in charge.

    14. Interacts well with other staff, physicians, and management of the facility.

    15. Maintains HIPPA complaints.

    16. Other duties as assigned.


    1. High school graduate.

    2. 1+ years of hemodialysis experience required.

    3. Current certification as a hemodialysis technician required.

    4. Meets requirements of pre-employment screening and physical.

    5. Previous patient care experience required.

    6. Ability to anticipate, prioritize, perform and complete multiple job responsibilities in a timely manner.

    7. Ability to deal directly with patients / families.

    8. Ability to work independently under stressful conditions.

    9. Requires excellent teamwork and communication skills in voice control/tone, body language, manners, attitude, accuracy and listening.

    10. Requires excellent customer service skills

    11. Computer knowledge or ability / willingness to learn computer skills.

    12. Ability to work with chemicals and disinfectants utilized in the dialysis process.

    As applicable, the individual has training/competency in attending to the special needs and/or behaviors appropriate to the age of the patients for which care is being provided.
