  • Overview



    The Cybersecurity Engineer helps to design, implement and support Enterprise Security tools and programs. Understands the UVMHN security standards, makes recommendations for standards change and implements security technologies to meet those standards. The Cybersecurity Engineer works to ensure successful implementation and functionality of security products. Evaluate security technologies and controls to meet the need of the organization. The Cybersecurity Engineer will have primary responsibility over the New York Region of UVMHN, supporting overall cybersecurity strategy.




     The Cybersecurity Engineer reports directly to the Adirondack Regional Information Security Officer with matrixed reporting to the Health Network Cybersecurity Officer, and works closely with other Engineers, Cybersecurity Architect, and Cyber Operation Analysts to ensure the proper implementation of the UVMHN Cybersecurity systems and controls are working.




     The Cybersecurity Engineer coordinates closely with the Cybersecurity Architect and Cybersecurity Operations Analysts. Primary contacts include: Engineers, Application Analysts, and Cybersecurity Operation Analysts. There is also communication and coordination with outside agencies, particularly vendors, in implementing our information security products.


    1. Assists in evaluating, recommending, and selecting equipment, services, and network components to serve data security systems.
    2. Assists in budgetary recommendations for upcoming networking, security, or auditing projects.
    3. Uses network management tools to perform security and network diagnostics.
    4. Provides written and graphical input for security documentation and maintains that documentation.
    5. Leads projects as assigned, directing both project tasks and project resources.
    6. Performs routine security audits.
    7. Develops and follows best practices and standards surrounding the security of patient information in corporate network (to include business partners).
    8. Interacts with vendor personnel regarding problem resolution and\or future purchases.
    9. Configures and sets up complete systems (workstations, servers, networks, etc) in support of data loss prevention and auditing.
    10. Stays current with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations and appropriate responses.
    11. Create and maintain user accounts and their access to file systems and applications.
    12. Other duties as assigned.


    1. Bachelor’s degree required.
    2. 5 or more years of information systems experience or equivalent required.
    3. 4 or more years of cybersecurity specific experience or demonstrated knowledge across cybersecurity concepts required.
    4. Must have an understanding of technical security controls and processes.
    5. Must have an understanding of technical network diagrams.
    6. Familiarity with change management process required.
    7. Familiarity with health care relevant regulatory legislation and standards for the protection of health information and patient privacy required.
    8. Ability to organize and carry out technical projects required.
    9. Strong verbal and written communication skills required.
    10. Knowledge of security hardware and software products that comply with current industry standards required.
    11. Experience with network security and disaster recovery is required.
    12. Must be well organized, able to set priorities, and be adept at leading multiple projects required.
    13. Must be able to read, write, comprehend, and translate technical instruction and have the ability to be extremely detail oriented.
    14. Highly self-motivated and directed required.
    15. Proven analytical, evaluative, and problem solving abilities required.
    16. Ability to provide a high level of quality work with a dedication to customer service required.
    17. Demonstrated ability to function in a high-pressure environment required.
