  • Overview

    The Vice President, Practice Operations is a senior level executive position at Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital (CVPH) and in the recently formed University of Vermont Health Network Medical Group (UVMHN MG).  This position focuses on providing high-value services and operational oversight of the CVPH physician practices.


    The position is responsible for standardizing operational processes and policies across the CVPH practices in support of the mission and vision of CVPH and the UVMHN MG.  The emphasis is on the achievement of the ideal patient encounter, including efficient and effective high value care throughout the CVPH practices.  This is accomplished through a matrix reporting relationship with the CVPH President/Chief Operations Officer, CVPH Regional Physician Leader and the UVMHN MG Vice President for Regional Practice Operations.  The CVPH President/Chief Operations Officer works closely with the CPH Senior Management Team, physician leaders and UVMHN MG executives in meeting the strategic, operational and financial goals of the CVPH practice.


    Strategic and operational goals include improving financial and operating performance in each practice, improving access, supporting clinical delivery optimization efforts, implementing clinical workflows and process in support of the Epic implementation and supporting the transition to population health.


    The Vice President is a member of the senior CVPH management team and works closely with the President/Chief Financial Officer, Senior Vice President/Chief Financial Officer, Chief Medical Officer, Regional Physician Leader and other executives and physician leaders.


    A strong, cohesive dyad relationship is required between the CVPH Vice President and the CVPH Regional Physician Leader.


    As a senior CVPH practice executive, this individual will interact regularly with UVMHN executives and especially the UVMHN MG Vice President for Regional Practices.


    1. Oversees ambulatory physician practices and supports inpatient and diagnostic professional services at CVPH. Oversees and mentors CVPH practice management staff. Responsible for practice staffing plans. Monitors practice financial performance.
    2. Serves as a member of the senior executive management team for CVPH, including participation in governance, planning and operational matters. Works closely with CVPH executives, management team members and staff in developing and executing performance improvement plans.  Serves as a member of the CVPH Practice Management Committee.
    3. Works closely with the UVMHN MG Vice President for Regional Practices in implementing UVMHN MG policies and procedures.  Serves as administrative liaison between the CVPH physicians and UVMHN MG administration.  Participates in UVMHN MG committees including meetings for regional practice executives.
    4. Oversees professional services in areas such as provider relations, financial planning including compensation and benefit planning, and other services.  Builds cohesive relationships with providers and staff.  Works with physician leadership and executives in planning for the recruitment of new providers, including the preparation of business plans.  Facilitates clinical practice redesign efforts.  Works with practice leadership to improve patient access and service.  Develops and implements plans for supporting Advanced Practice Providers.
    5. Participates actively in planning efforts in support of the implementation of Epic and other technology solutions across CVPH practices.


    1. Bachelor's degree in Business, Accounting or a related field required.  Master's preferred.
    2. Position requires excellent analytic and communication skills.  Strong financial planning skills and knowledge of physician compensation models are essential.  Must have familiarity with physician practice management process, hospital operations, electronic medical record systems and human resources policies.
    3. Ten years of progressive health care management experience at the Director’s level or above, with experience in leading a multi-specialty physician practice in a community practice setting is required.  The ideal candidate will have experience with faculty and community practices.
