  • Overview

    The Emergency Department (Main) Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner practices under the clinical supervision of the Medical Director of the Emergency Department, demonstrates competency and efficiency in the care of the acutely ill patient. This position demonstrates Emergency Department competency in assessing, diagnosing and treating a full range of patients in accordance with delineation of privileges; Demonstrates ability to organize and prioritize patient care activities; Selects and interprets laboratory and diagnostic testing; Communicates medical assessment and plan to patient and attending physician; Completes medical record documentation in a timely manner. The primary responsibility is the timely assessment/tx/dispos of patients present to the Emergency Department Main.


    1. Completes accurate and necessary history and physical examination to assure assessment of patient condition and needs.
    2. Orders/interprets appropriate diagnostic tests and documents appropriately.
    3. Formulates clinical impression/diagnosis/plan based on clinical findings.
    4. Initiates and documents appropriate treatment plan.
    5. Demonstrates ability to perform the following procedures:
    • Suturing
    • Suture removal
    • Wound care
    • Defibrillation
    • Arterial blood draws
    • Ordering/administration of oxygen
    • Administering emergency medication
    • Administering intravenous fluids or blood transfusions
    • Obtaining written consents for surgical procedures and research protocols.
    • Performing venous and arterial puncture for obtaining samples and for administering medications prescribed by attending physician
    1. Manages complex patients and maintains effective consultation and collaboration with Medical Staff.
    2. Performs advanced ED procedures under the supervision of and ED physician to include but not limited to: Lumbar punctures, Intubation, Venous access.
    3. Participates in departmental/hospital committees as requested.
    4. Participates in departmental/hospital-wide quality improvement programs.
    5. Completes medical record documentation in a timely manner.
    6. Assumes on call and rotation schedules as required to meet patient care and staffing needs.
    7. Demonstrates commitment to continued growth through attendance at educational programs.
    8. Maintains working knowledge of the various stages of growth development and health status of these wide populations. Utilized appropriate resources.
    9. Demonstrates knowledge of the Scope of Practice for Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioners in New York State; CVPH Medical Staff Bylaws, Emergency Department Policies, Protocols, Procedures and Standards of medical practice.
    10. Regularly attends departmental meetings.
    11. Other duties as assigned.


    1. Licensed as a NYS Certified Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner.
    2. One year of clinical experience as a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner.
    3. ACLS and PALS required.
    4. ATLS required.
    5. DEA privileges required.
    6. Must Attend and complete Emergency Department Boot Camp.

    As applicable, the individual has training/competency in attending to the special needs and/or behaviors appropriate to the age of the patients for which care is being provided.
