Performs Nuclear Medicine procedures in a variety of settings and locations on patients as ordered by licensed providers; in an ethical and professional manner according to hospital and departmental policy and according to any applicable New York State guidelines. Must assist in all aspects of the Radiology Department operation.


  1. Performs Nuclear Med exams according to established protocols
  2. Carefully screens patients prior to examination, to assure that there is no unknown existing condition(s) that would be contraindicate performing the procedure.
  3. Screens all females of child bearing age regarding the possibility of pregnancy and reports any questionable or positive responses to the Radiologist, Supervisor or referring physician for guidance prior to beginning the examination; documents this on the request.
  4. Reviews the Nuclear Med Request and Physicians Order for the existence of pertinent clinical information and special instructions before performing the examination; obtains clinical information where necessary,
  5. Is responsible for completing the patient assessment and technologist note section on the Nuclear Med Request and signing their name.
  6. Explains procedures to patients/ families, providing appropriate emotional support. Remains alert to patient’s physical condition, recognizes signs of distress and initiates prescribed emergency procedures.
  7. Calculates and prepares the appropriate dosage of radionuclide materials. Utilizes appropriate safety / radiation protection methods when preparing / administering radionuclide materials.
  8. Administers prescribed dosages of appropriate radiopharmaceuticals; performs venipuncture and lock insertion for designated examinations and injects radiopharmaceuticals; prepares and administers oral radiopharmaceuticals.
  9. Maintains equipment and work areas in clean, safe, orderly manner. Reports any malfunctions to a Supervisor. Performs quality control on all equipment, performs daily survey, etc. and maintains related records.
  10. Follows safety procedures and assists in maintaining appropriate records for hospital and regulatory agencies.
  11. Assists in the training and clinical supervision of student technologists.
  12. Assists in the ordering, assessing and storing all supplies. Responsible for ordering, discarding, storage, etc. of all radionuclide materials.
  13. Assures that all exams are QA’d, tracked and labeled correctly.
  14. Practices Infection Control according to hospital policy
  15. Other duties as assigned.


  1. Must be licensed by the New York State Department of Health as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist. Must be registered by the ARRT (Nuclear Medicine) or the NMTCB (Nuclear Medicine) or pass the Nuclear Medicine Registry within one year of meeting eligibility requirements. Eligibility requirements will be reviewed by employee and manager/supervisor. In the event that an employee has unsuccessfully attempted to become registered within the required timeframe, the employee is granted a six month extension to become registered / credentialed.
  2. Requires sufficient sensitivity and interpersonal skills in dealing with apprehensive patients and family in a professional and compassionate manner.
  3. Requires positive and effective communicating skill for interaction with physicians and staff in any situation.
  4. Requires an ability to think and act quickly in order to deliver efficient quality care in a variety of stressful situations.
  5. Must be BLS certified (or obtained within 3 months).


As applicable, the individual has training/competency in attending to the special needs and/or behaviors appropriate to the age of the patients for which care is being provided.
