Overview

The Assistant Nurse Manager is responsible for working collaboratively with the Manager to plan for, direct, supervise and evaluate all program operations and patient care delivery in assigned clinical areas.  This individual shares responsibility with the Manager for staffing/scheduling, staff performance and appraisal process, incident report review/follow-up, and quality/safety improvement activities.  The Assistant Manager is responsible for management/leadership of the unit/department in the absence of the Manager.  They share joint responsibilities with the Manager for all outcomes of the unit to include but not limited to patient and staff satisfaction.

 

This individual serves as a clinical resource for unit/nursing staff.  They are also responsible for monitoring/assessing clinical practice, guiding the development of standards of care and practice, and counseling/educating staff when practice deviates from standards.  The Assistant Manager provides performance appraisals for staff and helps to monitor progress of developmental plans.  This individual displays competence in the 5 core health care competencies of interdisciplinary team work, quality improvement, evidence based practice, patient focused care and informatives.  They will have consistent off shift presence and visibility.

Responsibilities

Interdisciplinary Teamwork/Communication:

  • Communicates effectively (written and verbal). Provides information in a clear, transparent way allowing continual feedback.
  • Builds interdisciplinary relationships and fosters engagement. Focused on collaboration, conflict resolution and patient focused care.
  • Serves as a resource (both internal and external) promoting positive image of the department and CVPH Medical Center.
  • Develops credibility and effective relationships with all staff. (medical, nursing, ancillary)
  • Assists with unit staff meetings. Conducts meetings of staff on all three shifts on an as needed basis.
  • Coordinates handling of off-shift issues by being physically available 24/7.

Values Communication and Relationship Building:

  • Responsible for coaching staff and providing support and expectations.
  • Provides service recovery to patient and family.
  • Collaborates with the Manager to provide education to staff in form of focus and groups.
  • Provides visual aids for patient and staff education while also providing education and support to student nurses.
  • Gives and receives feedback including recognition and coaching for continuous improvement.

Evidence Based Practice:

  • Actively participates in departmental leadership.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of current nursing practice ensuring compliance with standards of care and practice, State Nurse Practice Act, State/Federal regulations, and Emergency Nurses Association.
  • Participate in and support hospital/department goals and objectives, and change initiatives.
  • Assists to identify and ensure competence appropriate to department nursing area.
  • Collaborates in developing and maintaining standards of care and model of care delivery, consistent with professional standards.

Quality/Patient Focused Care:

  • Demonstrates service excellence at all times and always puts patient care needs first.
  • Conducts leadership rounding with patients and staff, conduct coaching with staff when needs identified.
  • Assists in unit quality assurance/improvement programs.
  • Participates in unit Interdisciplinary Team Meetings.

Informatics/Business Skills:

  • Utilizes accountability, conflict management and coaching skills to continually elevate performance.
  • Participates in the maintenance and planning of unit budget (operational and capital).
  • Assists in the recruitment and retention efforts of the department. Interviews candidates for positions.
  • Supports the implementation and monitoring of the department’s fiscal plan.
  • Assists the Manager in the monthly review of the operating reports.
  • Supports and monitors the department’s staffing plan.
  • Demonstrates advanced competence/Skill with Microsoft Office products (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint), internet search engines and technology based communication programs, (e.g. Outlook).
  • Participates in the evaluation of information systems in the practice setting.
  • Manages applications for structured data entry and analysis (e.g. productivity measuring systems, acuity levels).

Leadership and Professional Practice:

  • Provides department leadership and represents the Manager in his/her absence (e.g. meeting attendance).
  • Demonstrates ongoing professional development and lifelong learning in self and staff.
  • Participates in the development and communication of a consistent strategic plan for the department.
  • Assists the Manager in assuring that patient care is delivered utilizing an appropriate model of care delivery for the patient population served.
  • Ensures that care providers practice in roles as allowed by NYS Practice Act, the ANA Code of Ethics, other regulatory agencies, and applicable governing laws.
  • Assists the Manager in the application of methods to hold staff accountable (i.e. standards, strategic plan).

Qualifications

  1. BSN or MSN in Nursing required.
  2. MSN in Healthcare preferred.
  3. Current NYS Registered Nurse required.
  4. Certification in specialty preferred or active involvement with completion within twelve (12) months.
  5. This position requires flexibility in schedule as deemed necessary to meet the needs of the department.
  6. Must demonstrate leadership and management abilities with good oral and written communication skills.
  7. Three (3) years relevant clinical practice experience with at least two (2) years supervisor of management experience required.
  8. Must be proficient with Microsoft Office, Policy Manager, Soarian, Bed Tracking, Transport Tracking, Healthstream, HRMS, Smart Square, Soft Med, Pyxis, MSDS, Medkeeper, PCM Auditor, Med Series 4, Nash, Comm Tech Messenger, MAK.

As applicable, the individual has training/competency in attending to the special needs and/or behaviors appropriate to the age of the patients for which care is being provided.
