Overview

The OR/Anesthesia Support Assistant performs various duties, as directed, for the direct and indirect care of the surgical patient and/or patients receiving anesthesia.  She/He is responsible to provide support and assistance to direct care staff.  The OR/Anesthesia Support Assistant is also responsible for cleaning, stocking, organizing the OR rooms to include the anesthesia areas, scrub rooms, storage areas, break rooms, and outer corridor throughout the day.  She/He must be reliable, work independently, be highly organized, capable of anticipating where assistance is needed, and work well in the surgical environment.  The OR/Anesthesia Support Assistant is also responsible for the stocking, maintenance and organization of all anesthesia supplies and equipment

Responsibilities

  1. Safely maintains cleanliness and comfort with consideration for patients, visitors and staff.
  2. Identifies requests by patients and reports such requests to the appropriate staff.
  3. Demonstrates the ability to work with all associated cleaning equipment used daily.
  4. Identifies heavy floor, furniture care and additional cleaning needs, and refers to Environmental Services as appropriate.
  5. Assures supplies/equipment needed by room staff are obtained and distributed to the room in a timely manner as directed.
  6. Cleans the surgical scrub sinks daily. Resupplies surgical scrub brushes (non-disposable and disposable).  Empties and relines trash containers at the scrub sinks.
  7. Changes corridor mop head and pail solutions after each use.
  8. Checks and fills blanket and solution warmers in the department.
  9. Empties departments trash as needed. Ensures recyclables throughout the department are placed in the appropriate location for pick-up.
  10. Performs daily housekeeping activities to maintain an organized, clean, functional environment and demonstrates knowledge of proper storage and maintenance of sterile supplies and equipment.
  11. Assists in the transfer of infant, child, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients to/from stretchers, wheelchairs, patient beds and surgical beds.  Assists patients to bathrooms as needed.  Ensures oxygen availability for patient transport.
  12. Assists with positioning, lifting, and turning anesthetized and unanesthetized infant, child, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients. Holds patient extremities during skin preps.
  13. Assists with room and procedure set-up.
  14. Maintains a safe infection controlled environment through proper attire, traffic patterns, as per policy and isolation procedures.
  15. Cleans the surgical room after each procedure.
  16. Assists scrub personnel in breaking down/disinfecting contaminated instruments. Transports case carts to the room.  Transports used case carts to dirty lift.
  17. At the conclusion of the routine surgical caseload, terminally cleans room.
  18. Transports patients to/from Surgery/PACU, insuring 02 availability for transport, and transports specimens to/from the Lab/X-ray as directed.
  19. Returns blood to Blood Bank and X-ray cart to Radiology at end of shift.
  20. Reports equipment that is out of order, empties linen and keeps corridors and supply rooms free from obstruction.
  21. Reads posted communication in a timely manner.
  22. Completes anesthesia machine checks as directed.
  23. Stocking, cleaning, turnover and terminalization of anesthesia work area.
  24. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  1. High school graduate or G.E.D.
  2. Previous perioperative services experience will be considered first.
  3. Previous clinical (patient care) experience required.
  4. Ability to anticipate, prioritize, perform, and complete multiple job responsibilities in a timely manner.
  5. Ability to work independently under stressful conditions.
  6. Demonstrates strong organizational skills.
  7. Meets requirements of pre-employment screening and physical.
  8. Excellent attendance record required.
  9. Must be able to take call as scheduled.
  10. Must obtain Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification within six (6) months of hire.

 

As applicable, the individual has training/competency in attending to the special needs and/or behaviors appropriate to the age of the patients for which care is being provided.
