Overview

A Patient Safety Assistant monitors assigned patients under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse. The Patient Safety Assistant provides constant observation to patients who may be in danger of harming themselves or acting in an unsafe manner. Patient Safety Assistants offer hands on in the moment assistance to the patient and other staff members when needed. It is critical that Patient Safety Assistants provide timely and accurate communication, documentation and maintain a harmonious, team oriented, customer friendly environment. Patient Safety Assistants must be able to function competently in a computerized medical setting.

 

Responsibilities

  1. Partners with Nursing to provide responsive, service- oriented patient care
  • Provides continuous observation to assigned patients
  • Meets with RN formally at start and end of the shift for report and assignment information
  • Participates with RN in bedside hand-off of care
  • Collaborates throughout the shift with RN on progress and care of patient.
  1. Provides care according to standards for patients requiring safety protocols
  • appropriately applies and monitors restraints and seizure precaution equipment while in use
  • Documents and communicates care in an accurate, consistent and timely manner to RN or Charge RN to include any changes observed in condition or behavior of patient
  • Provides continuous observation to assigned patients
  • Remains alert and never leaves patient alone.
  • Performs in crisis and emergency (CPR, Heimlich) while maintaining a positive calm approach
  • Adequately performs use of Therapeutic Crisis Intervention skills maintaining PMCS training
  1. Provides or assists patients with activities of daily living as needed or assigned
  • Maintains a clean and safe environment
  • Provides care using infection control practices as outlined in organizational policy and procedures.
  • Wears appropriate PPE for task at hand (ie; toileting, showering, eating, ambulating)
  • Uses appropriate mobility and safe patient handling equipment as needed for care
  • Assists other team members including in accomplishing patient care as needed for the assigned patient.

Qualifications

  1. High school graduate or equivalent work experience, including ability to read, write and comprehend medical terminology required.
  2. Previous experience in a medical/clinical setting is preferred.
  3. Meets requirements of pre-employment screening and physical is required.
  4. Successfully compete Preventing and Managing Crisis Situations (PMCS) training within the orientation/probation period is required.
  5. Must demonstrate competency to perform CPR and Heimlich Manuever.
  6. Must have the ability to use basic computer skills is required.
  7. Ability to work independently, handle interruptions, take direction and prioritize.
  8. Must work well as a team member
  9. High level of sensitivity, interpersonal skills and effective verbal communication skills is required.                                   

As applicable, the individual has training/competency in attending to the special needs and/or behaviors appropriate to the age of patients for which care is being provided.
