Overview

Assists the section Supervisor in achieving efficient Laboratory operation by performing clinical tests and assuming assigned administrative functions. Supports Laboratory testing services by performing specimen collection and processing, quality control and maintenance functions and results reporting and verification. Coordinates Laboratory section training and inservice programs to maintain and upgrade competency at the level required by the Supervisor as procedures are changed or added. Functions as quality assurance / quality control coordinator as requested. Writes policies and procedures as requested. Assists the laboratory Supervisor in evaluating additions to the test menu and performing required validation studies.

Responsibilities

1. Performs clinical and proficiency tests under the minimal supervision of a NYSDOH qualified Supervisor or Director.

2. Performs quality control procedures as required by the Supervisor. Evaluates quality control results before proceeding with clinical testing. Records all quality control results and takes necessary corrective actions. Evaluates quality control trends under the direction of the Supervisor and implements corrective action as necessary.

3. Collects or aids in the collection and processing of patient specimens for testing.

4. Evaluates and implements new procedures as requested by the Laboratory Supervisor

5. Acts as a resource for the MLT staff in resolving technical, quality control and instrumentation problems.

6. Assumes assigned charge duties in the absence of the Supervisor, supervising technical personnel and reporting of findings, performing tests requiring special scientific skills and, in the absence of the Director or Supervisor, is responsible for the proper performance of all laboratory procedures.

7. Proposes performance improvement initiatives. Coordinates data collection and evaluation. Assists the Supervisor in implementing process improvements.

8. Reviews all Quality Assurance logs and initiates corrective actions as required by section policy.

9. Coordinates orientation, training and competency assessments for Medical Technologists, Technicians and MLT students.

10. Coordinates Laboratory section work assignments in accordance with the department schedule to maintain a timely work flow.

11. Reviews Laboratory section workload and continuing education records and recommends corrective action to Section Supervisor as appropriate.

12. Performs all routine scheduled equipment maintenance. Follows troubleshooting procedures when equipment malfunctions. Completes all maintenance record keeping documents. Reviews maintenance records as assigned by the Supervisor.

13. Recommends appropriate Laboratory Section training / educational programs.

14. Reviews accreditation checklists, makes recommendations to Section Supervisor. Reviews / writes supporting policies and procedures.

15. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

1. Licensed or eligible (application pending with a limited license in effect) as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist in the State of New York

2. Employees with a limited license must obtain full license within New York State guidelines.

3. Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology (hospital-based formal internship required) OR

4. Bachelor's Degree in related science from an accredited college with subsequent relevant clinical laboratory experience for one year (2080 hours). Degree must include sufficient science and math credits to meet minimum NYSDOH requirements for a Technologist.

5. ASCP, NCA or equivalent certification is highly recommended.

6. Six years (12,240 hrs.) experience as a Medical Technologist in the area to be assigned as Lead Medical Technologist.

 

As applicable, the individual has training/competency in attending to the special needs and/or behaviors appropriate to the age of the patients for which care is being provided.
